comparing prices is never really fair for anyone... for example, a $50,000 brand new corvette will yield the same performance as a $30,000 4 year old corvette (well, when we were talking C5 on C5). and starting with a busted C3 that you pick up for $2500 at an auto auction, i'm sure you could build up something that would blow the doors of a C5.

not to mention, building up a civic to perform like a porsche still leaves a lot of things to be desired... the civic won't get you as much pussy, it won't get you respect amongst country club types (if that's what you're looking for), it won't have luxury items, and probably won't be as well-rounded of a daily driver... a 300 hp civic is probably a bear on long trips, whereas a porsche can still handle amazing but probably has a much nicer ride.

now, if you're talking new car on new car, then i don't think you can, in the tuning world, match the bargain of OEM. if the STi didn't exist for you to take parts from, how much would it cost to get a brand new WRX to the same level of performance? you're talking an aftermarket 6-speed $$$, upgraded everything... it's not gonna take long at all to add up the $6-$7 grand extra that an STi costs. is there any car that you could buy brand new and then mod to out-perform a corvette on a road course while still keeping your total costs under the cost of a corvette? i can't think of anything.

now, if you're going with a singular goal, like handling OR drag, then it's easy... hell, a new 2.5RS can be made faster in a straight line than an STi for less than the STi costs total. but it wouldn't be as well rounded.
