First post here. Want to say hi first and apologize ahead of time for the long question. I have a 97 civic dx. I noticed today on my way to work that my oil light turned on periodically. It happened mostly when I accelerated quickly and stopped and also when I was turning. When I got to work I looked under my car and noticed the oil pay seemed to be a little saturated. I touched it and there was oil. I kept watching it and I didnt see any oil drip. I checked by oil level and it seemed low (obviously because the oil light was coming on) I checked my car a little later during lunch and I didnt notice any oil puddle under my car. I turned on my car and the oil light didnt come on. Now one thing about my car is that I have an air suspension and sometimes if im not careful I bottom out because I dont realize Im not riding high enough. At first I thought the oil leak was because I cracked the oil pan from bottoming out but I didnt notice any dents or signs of abrasion on the pan. I did some research on this messageboard and Im thinking I might have a problem with the drain plug or the gasket? Well anyways later on this evening I bought some oil and put a quart in and the light hasnt come on since. Now my problem is just trying to figure out where the oil is leaking. At what capacity of oil will prompt the oil light to come on and why would the oil light only come on when stopping and turning? Is it because with my suspension the elevation of the car changes throwing the oil pressure off? The light never comes on when Im idle. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

if you are speaking about your oil pressure light, then its because the oil pressure has dropped to a level unsafe to the motor.

the "oil light" you speak of isn't for the oil level, it should be for the oil pressure.

Check the oil pressure sending unit.

Low oil level will also cause it to go on, if it's low enough to cause low pressure. However, a loose drainplug could also cause low pressure.

I had the same problem with my 89 teg. I replaced the oil with full synthetic, and the light hasn't come on since. I'm guessing my oil became too thin that it caused low pressure.

sometimes the oil pressure begins to drop becaue the rod bearings on the crank are going. I replaced bearins on a 91 prelude SI and that cured it. Helps the rods and crank last a little longer too.

when replying to an old topic, it is ok if you are providing information that can be later referenced. So before you bitch about an old topic being revisited, read it and ask yourself if it's useful. In this case. Yes it is.
