i know this doesn't really address your questions, but have you considered an insight? you can get 99s for 9-10k.

Tonyroll, I have seen folks commenting on VTEC prewiring in some CXs, but I'm sure I won't be able to be that choosy. I'm actually looking now at only 94s and 95s, since they also typically have full front airbags. And again, I was mainly thinking of a straight 5th gen swap if I get a 5th gen car, which is what I'm leaning toward right now. I don't know about that 6th gen 3-stage VTEC-E possiblility, but if I'm really at the point of planning on doing it, I'd certainly look into it. |

even if it's not prewired it's still an easy swap, mounts are the same, harness is pretty much plug and play, if you get a jdm engine just reuse your stock harness and add thye wires for vtec

One thing to look into would be to get an OBD1 setup (92-95) and run Uberdata or some other free chip tuning program to set the engine up for premium gas. You can tune it more aggressively to run on higher octane (more timing) and get even higher efficiency. With the prices of different grades of gas so close together these days, paying an extra 10-20 cents a gallon (maybe 3-5% more?) isn't a bad thing if you're able to squeeze another 10% efficiency out of the engine.
