USB 1 supports data transfer at up to 1.5 Mbps for low-speed devices and up to 12 Mbps for full-speed devices.
USB 2 will support up to 480 Mbps for high-speed devices.
Not sure what operating system you are using, this will work for most windows operating systems. Right click "my computer" select properties, highlight the hardware tab, and chose device manager. There you should be able to look down towards the bottom of the list and see if you have any universal serial bus controllers. I don?t think a 4 year old dell would have USB2.

I believe the USB 2.0 specification was approved in 2000, I could be wrong. I have never known Dell to use the latest technology. I guess you can get anything if you request it and are willing to pay.
