TRENTON, N.J. (AP) An odd visitor to the state capital made quite a splash here Tuesday. Authorities said they spotted a 10- to 12-foot whale in the Delaware River. The whale was seen by state wildlife personnel and state marine police and was believed to be a beluga whale, said state police Capt. Al Della Fave.

The whale was spotted just south of the city?s famed ?Trenton Makes The World Takes? bridge and was believed to be swimming south toward the ocean, ?The way it should be heading,? Della Fave said.

He said it was last seen about 1 p.m. Officials said they were fielding calls from passers-by who spotted the animal.
The whale would have had to swim past major cities such as Philadelphia and Camden to make it north some 80 miles from the Atlantic Ocean to Trenton.

State environmental officials said they could not confirm the whale siting, and had dispatched a biologist to search for it on the river.

Environmental Department spokeswoman Karen Hershey said she was not sure whether a whale had ever been in the vicinity before.

Della Fave said marine officers were patrolling the river in boats and planned to herd the whale south if they saw it.
?I?ve been in this office 12 years,? he said. ?I?ve never heard of anything heading up the Delaware like that.?

A right whale?named Waldo the Wrong-Way Right Whale by Philadelphians?straggled into the Delaware River in 1995. The whale beached itself at an oil terminal in Pennsauken, N.J., but disappeared after about 10 days. It was found two years later swimming near Canada.
