My 90 Civic 4dr developed a loud creaking/grinding type noise during low speed cornering. Happens only during sharp slow turns like when you are making a turn from a stop sign. Initially it sounded like it was coming from the right front and only happened during left turns when that side is under load. Now it happens when turning in either direction and may be coming from the left also. It sounds like a bad bushing. Anyway everything seems to look ok and I don't see anything obvious. The front struts were replaced recently which didn't do anything as far as the noise goes. CV jouints seem ok. Any input would be appreciated. TIA

Dave, unfortunately, it sounds to me like it may be the cv's

If you get the time, try and jack up the entire front end of your ride.
Having it all up in the air will take a bit of stress off from everything.

Crawl underneith (be carefull) and grab ahold of one cv shaft at a time.
Shake the piss out of it. Make sure that there is infact no play in them.

I'm guessing that there may still be some slop somewhere in there.

Get back.

What you need to do is place a floor jack underneath the FRAME on both sides of the car and jack the front end up. Then using wheel chocks of some kind and jackstands, secure the vehicle so it doesn't fall on you. Then after the front suspension is completely relaxed give the front two wheels firm shakes side to side and also up and down. This will check ball joints, tie rods and wheel bearings/hub bearings. If there is considerable play side to side only then inspect the tie rods, up and down only is a ball joint, and if th eplay is equal both ways suspect wheel bearings.

How long ago were the struts changed? Was the noise present before then? If not how long afterward did it start? I dont think it is a cv joint mainly because it would still only happend at certain turns I.E. left turn right outer will click, right turn left outer will click. Doesn't matter the speed but only that you have the accelerator depressed. Also look for power steering leaks and check the fluid, lube the ball joints and such. I think that's about it, any questions then pm me and Ill help as best I can.

Thanks for the response guys. As soon as I have the time I will jack the car up and let youknow whats going on. Its been making the noise for months and has been getting progressively louder. It was doing it before the front struts were replaced. I was hoping that since I had to replace them anyway it wound take care of the noise too. I have been leaning toward the cv's but will have to get under there and really give it a good look. Thanks again.
