I've always heard great things on Eibach prokit and Sportline applications. I have ground control coilovers which use Eibach springs and they ride wonderfully with a 1.5" drop on 16's and KYB GR-2 struts. I've also heard of a company (suspention techniques or something like that?) that uses basically the same springs as Eibach for a lower price. I know someone who bought them for his Escort: gave a 1.5" drop and he claims they ride nice, but who knows. You get what you pay for sometimes so they might not be all that great after awhile.

i got used neuspeed springs for $99 shipped. i think it's 1.85 front, 1.5 rear. they ride pretty nice..it dropped lower than i thought it would though. it looks nice, but whenever i bank left, the front right tire rubs againt the inner fender wall thing. i think it's cause the cold air intake wasn't designed well and pushes the wall out. it's already worn a huge hole :-/. i just gotta get turbo sooner :P

I know you said no coilovers but its good to adjust the height of your car whenever you change the size of your wheels. As you can camelian had some problems w/ his fender rubbing. When I got my 17's I was rubbing only on sharp turns but after a few twists w/ the coilovers I didnt have any problems.
